European vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 4. Thresholds of perception of whole-body linear oscillation.

Thresholds for the detection of linear oscillatory motion at 0.3 Hz in the X, Y and Z body axes were determined during the flight of Spacelab-1 and on the ground pre- and post-flight, using the method of limits with a single staircase procedure. Pre-flight, Z axis thresholds (mean 0.077 ms-2) were significantly higher than X and Y thresholds (mean 0.029 ms-2). Measures obtained on three crew members in-flight exhibited thresholds greater, by a factor of 1.5-4.3, than those obtained pre-flight. Influence of proprioceptive information on space orientation on the ground and in orbital weightlessness

Conscious space orientation depends on afferent information from different sense organs including the labyrinth, the eyes, tactile cues from the skin, joint receptors, muscle spindles, tendon organs and possibly viscera. An important role is played by impulses from the cervical position receptors in interaction with concomitant information from the otolith system. Comparison of actual and imagined execution of whole-body movements after a long exposure to microgravity

Five cosmonauts were tested 30 days before a six-month space flight and also on the 2nd and the 6th day after their return to Earth. Cosmonauts performed and imagined a task that involved climbing two stairs to step onto a platform, jumping down with both feet and walking normally for a distance of 4 m. Durations of actual and imagined movements were measured by an electronic stopwatch. Results indicated that cosmonauts performed actual and imagined movements with similar durations before and after the space flight. To find optimal solutions for rapid adaptation, cosmonauts have to decide whether parameters from the world or their body have changed and to estimate their properties. Here, we investigated sensorimotor adaptation after a spaceflight of 10 days. Transition from self tilt to object tilt during maintained lateral tilt in parabolic flight.

Abstract 19 young healthy subjects were subjected to parabolic rollercoaster flight. A horizontal luminous line was seen by the subjects in a headfixed goggle device. During the hypergravic phases of parabolic flight the luminous line seemed to rotate into and during the hypogravic phase against the direction of static head tilt. Ocular counter rotation and activity of the neck position receptors cannot explain these subjective rotations. Photobiology in space: An experiment on Spacelab I

The joint European/US Spacelab Mission I, scheduled for October 1983 for a 9 day lasting Earth-orbiting flight, provides a laboratory system for various disciplines of science, including exobiology. On the pallet, in the experiment ES 029 "Microorganisms and Biomolecules in Space Hard Environment" 316 dry samples of Bacillus subtilis spores will be exposed to space vacuum and/or selected wavelenghs of solar UV radiation. Blood flow in the internal jugular veins during the spaceflight - Is it actually bidirectional?

Recently intriguing results of the research performed on astronauts of the International Space Station have been published. Unexpectedly, in some crew members a stagnant and bidirectional flow in the internal jugular vein was found, and in one of the astronauts this vein seemed to be totally thrombosed. Arm end-point trajectories under normal and micro-gravity environments.

Abstract The purpose of the present experiment was to study the way in which the CNS represents gravitational force during vertical arm pointing movements. Movements in upward and downward directions were executed by two cosmonauts in normal-gravity and weightlessness. Analyses focused upon finger kinematics in the sagittal plane. In normal-gravity, downward direction movements showed smaller curvatures and greater relative times to peak velocity ( AT MT ) when compared with upward direction movements.
